AND THE WINNER IS.......

‘The thing is guv, I’m finding this particularly interesting.’

I’d entered the lounge whistling what I thought was rather a jolly tara-diddle, to be met with a frown from the lad.

‘Sorry Bing I was unaware that you were so deeply engrossed in the current fare being served up on the box in the corner.’

On the ‘magic’ window, I noticed a Border Collie positively whizzing around a course of poles, slides, tunnels and see-saws etc,.

‘Blimey old poop those chaps can really shift!’

‘Quite, quite.’

‘I have to admit aged puffer, I’m more your steady bounding and trundling sort of chap, built for the long run rather than these helter-skelter Jack-in-the-boxes!’

‘And Jill-in-the-boxes’

It was Bing’s turn to say….

‘Quite, quite.’

To which he added an…..

‘Old fruit.’

I sipped from a steaming cuppa, and nodded.

‘So young Bingo what are we watching?’

‘I believe it’s called Strictly Come Barking!’

‘Really?’

‘If not, it blooming ought to be guv.’

We lapsed into an easy silence, although I could tell the lad was rather tense as various different types of dogs were trundled around the ring.

His chin was now resting on his paws and he was looking a tad sad……

And then……and then!  Out came a Bassett Griffon Vendeen!

‘Huzzar! I thought we’d been missed out old poop.’

‘Well Bing there are many types of…….’

(I was given a withering look!)

‘I mean….um you know one cant expect……..’

(The look was withering on!)

We looked at the screen and the rather perky young lady parading around.

Bings tail was wagging, and his floppy ears were locked into their listening mode.

In short dear reader, the next few minutes seemed to take hours, as this elderly gent looked at all of the dogs in turn.
I was wondering what the outcome would be and keeping my fingers and toes crossed.

And then…..and then………..

‘And the winner of Crufts is……..’

‘Hurrah & huzzar! Well I never doubted it guv, she’s an absolute beauty and such.’

I was enormously relieved, as I'm sure how the lad would react if another dog had been chosen.

So folks, a Basset Griffon Vendeen was top dog at Crufts this year…….the relief in this part of Lowtown is immense.

I refuse to think about next year……I think we’ll all try and keep the lad busy on that day…..just in case!
